CEC - GEMNet (Guidelines for Emergency Medicine Network)

Introduction

The Guidelines in Emergency Medicine Network (GEMNet) is a joint venture by the College of Emergency Medicine (CEM), and the Faculty of Emergency Nursing of the Royal College of Nursing (FEN) (the sponsoring professional organisations). GEMNet's mission is to provide authoritative and reliable guidance on the management of medical emergencies by producing evidence-based guidelines that are relevant to Emergency Department practice.

GEMNet's work is envisaged to be complimentary to that of the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) in that it will address many issues relevant to emergency practice in the United Kingdom that may not be dealt with by the Institute for many years.

GEMNet has now become a standing subcommittee of the CEC. It is chaired by Prof Kevin Mackway-Jones. The Terms of Reference are available to download here.

Methodology

The guideline development methodology is based on that used by NICE. An outline of the methodology and development stages of the guidelines is available to download here.

GEMNet aims to establish centres of excellence across the UK to produce guidelines. The model below is being proposed to the College Council for approval:

GEMNet is proposing to establish a Guideline Co-ordination Centre and a number of Guideline Development Centres. Initially these will be based in:

  • Manchester
  • Bristol
  • Sheffield
  • Leicester
  • London

In the first year each centre will develop one new guideline and will review 6 MoM guidelines. Each centre will have a lead guideline developer (a Consultant) who will sit on the GEMNet Board. Further Guideline Development Centres may be developed in future years.

Guidelines

The first four completed guidelines have been published in December 2009. These are guidelines for the management of:

In 2010 GEMNet will be conducting a scoping exercise to determine which evidence based guidelines the specialty would most like to be developed next. If you would like to recommend topics for GEMNet guidelines please contact the CEC administrator (philip.mcmillan@collemergencymed.ac.uk)
