Recording CPD
Practitioners participating in the Emergency Medicine Professional Competence Scheme must have a suitable method of recording, storing and retrieving CPD activity. Most Emergency Medicine specialists in Ireland are Fellows of the College of Emergency Medicine (CEM) and ACEMT recommends registration with the CEM CPD programme as the preferred means of recording CPD. Emergency Medicine doctors who are not Fellows of the College may register with CEM for CPD purposes. For further details please visit the CPD section or contact chris.walsh@collemergencymed.ac.uk
Emergency Medicine doctors who are not Fellows of CEM may record their CPD with another recognised College providing the following criteria are met:
- There must be a robust system for recording and storing CPD activity e.g. online recording
- There must be a means of generating an annual record of CPD activity broken down into at least external and internal CPD
- There must be an audit process built into the CPD programme such that CPD returns of participants may potentially be scrutinised
In addition to the CEM CPD programme ACEMT recognises the following means of recording CPD, all of which meet the above criteria:
- Colles Portal (RCSI)
- Royal College of Physicians of Ireland
- Australasian College of Emergency Medicine
Recording personal learning CPD
Much personal learning e.g. journal reading is unverifiable. Doctors claiming credit for this type of activity should submit a reflective narrative of the activity on the specified form (appendix 3). This form should be countersigned by a Consultant in Emergency Medicine colleague working in the same department. Where applicable, this colleague should be the administrative lead for the department. This form will be available for download on the ‘Professional Competence Scheme’ section of the IAEM website (www.iaem.ie ) and the Emergency Medicine section of the RCSI website (www.rcsi.ie).
