New style trainees in their ST4 year or above may apply to take the Critical Appraisal paper from the Autumn 2011 diet onwards. There is no requirement to submit an intention to sit form in advance of this as the logistics for written examination do not pose the same challenges as direct face to face examinations.
The trainee must submit an appropriately completed ARCP form for their ST3 or ST4 year (as appropriate), including a signed confirmation that the trainee has completed a critical appraisal course or attended local relevant training days and must have passed the MCEM. The trainee will complete a specific form that will require the signature of the STC Chair or TPD.. The trainee will pay the standard fee for the Critical Appraisal Section of the FCEM examination. Failure in the Critical Appraisal paper will then require the trainee to undertake further training and they will not be permitted to take the Critical Appraisal paper again outside of the full FCEM examination.
Old style SpRs who have not passed the MCEM but have a satisfactory RITA for year SpR year 3 are entitled to take the SAQ Critical Appraisal Section providing they are not at the same time sitting the MCEM.
The form must be signed by the STC chair or TPD – the educational supervisor is not sufficient.
The Critical Appraisal SAQ examination will be sat when the FCEM examination main sitting is held and the closing dates for application are under ‘Fees and dates’ on our website.
Non Trainees: You must have completed a UK critical appraisal course. Please state the title of the course, the date of the course and enclose a copy of the course certificate as evidence.

CURRICULUM
The content (conditions covered, presentations and skills required) are essentially the same between the pre-2010 curriculum and post-2010 curriculum. The difference between the curriculum rests mainly in how the syllabus (list of conditions/presentations) is presented and also in the volume and type of work place based assessments required during the programme. there are other minor differences related to exam requirements for progression from core to higher training etc.
Therefore - for candidates preparing for FCEM - it doesn't matter which curriculum they use to access the syllabus or list of possible conditions and presentations that may be assessed - but we believe candidates might find the new curriculum easier to navigate and to "tick off" as they revise and prepare - particularly around the practical procedures list.
