Ultrasound training

Introduction

The College of Emergency Medicine includes Ultrasound in the curriculum for trainees. A subgroup has been established to look at this area and the purpose of the group is shown here.

A recent addition to this page is an outline business case for the purchase of an ultrasound machine. We hope it is helpful. It can be downloaded here.

There are two levels of Ultrasound proficiency for the CEM

Level 1 in Ultrasound

Details of level 1 can be downloaded here

A further document describes the assessment process for a practitioner to demonstrate competence in ultrasound at level 1.

Level 2 Certification in Emergency Medicine Ultrasound

Details of level 2 can be viewed here.  Enquiries about Level 2 training and standards should be addressed to Bob Jarman, Level 2 Working Group Lead.

A certificate in Ultrasound can be achieved - see here for an overview .  Applications for the Certificate should be addressed to Paul Atkinson, Certification Board Chair using the application form (download here).

Core knowledge

Core knowledge for ultrasound training is now detailed in a downloadable book.  This can be used for training, or as a course book, and it can be downloaded here.

Regional Leads and Courses

Each region now has a Ultrasound Training Co-ordinator who should be able to provide advice and leadership for the members wishing to develop their skills. The Ultrasound Level 1 Finishing School - 14th & 15th June 2012

The Ultrasound Level 1 Finishing School has been organised by Infomed Research & Training working in conjunction with the College of Emergency Medicine. This will take place on Thursday 14 June 2012 (only 32 places) for intensive supervised hands-on practice in all competence areas; and Friday 15 June 2012 (again, only 32 places) for formal assessment and final sign-off.  The venue is the Highpoint Conference Centre, 165 Glenfield Rd, Leicester LE3 6DJ.

The Finishing School is for colleagues who are seeking intensive supervised hands-on practice in all Ultrasound Level 1 (Core) competence areas (FAST, AAA, Vascular Access and ECHO in Life Support) in preparation for the formal assessment, or simply seeking opportunities to complete logged experience. The School is also geared to those who have found difficulty to find sufficient opportunities to scan, to polish up competencies, arrange formal assessment and get final sign-off.

The Finishing School Faculty is led by Bob Jarman and John Sloan and comprises experienced and qualified assessors.

To register, you need to have completed all 6 Enlightenme modules; a CEM approved course (e.g. Infomed Level 1 US Course) or local modular training and carried out scans [log book] and produced follow up notes and reflective writing on 10 case studies.
